Loisirs et centres d'intérêt : SLAM July 2008: "Green Day - Celtics Ride again: Article name: How do you like me now?
By Vincent Thomas:
On the Eve of the '06 Draft, I did a mock Draft on my blog, using all the players over the last 10 years. After completing my draft, it was clear that it was a great collection of talent, maybe the greatest Ever. (And this was before the likes of Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Kevin Durant, and Brandon Roy entered the league.) I named this era The Platinum Age. I thought, myabe, I was alone in this estimation. Then, last year, I was in New Jersey covering the playoffs when Commissioner David Stern-trying to deflect attention away from a New York Times story on officiating bias-put on his spin-artist hat, preaching that the real hot topic of the playoffs should be how incredible the League was at that moment. Of course, I agreed with him.
Fast forward to now, as the basketball world witnesses a historic season. Earlier this year, I tackled this subject for one of my "The Commish" columns, which you can find on slamonline.com. I thought, however, that it was only right to snag the real Commish to kick it about what remains an unappreciate, often unnoticed, revelation. We talked for nearly an hour. so it's impossible to offer the entire script here Where you read here below are excerpts.(Check slamonline.com for the rest. -Ed.)
Films et spectacles : SLAM: I say that talent-wise, play-wise, the leagueis in the best shape since the Golden Age of Bird-Magic-MJ. Do you agree? Are we in the midst of the NBA's next great era?
STERN: I have said the same thing, We have more great players right now than in any other period. If you look at the young guys-the Olympic team and younger-that great class of DWade, LeBron, Bosh, Melo, and you talk about young guys like Dwight Howard, Chris Paul, Brandon Roy and many more; then look at veterans that are future Hall of Famers-Kobe, KG, Duncan; then you add the other group, the international players-Tony (Parker), Manu, Dirk, Yao-look at the infusion there, So you have you Young Stars, the Great Ones, and Future Hall of Famers, and you international Stars. It's quite an array of talent.
SLAM: Let's keep talking about this historic talent for a minute. I've spent a lot of time thinking about this and I can't put my hand on it. Are there any variables that have dictated this talent explosion? What is is about this era? Why is it producing so many great ballplayers? Why are they reaching their potential?
STERN: That's a good one. Would you be disappointed if I said I'm not sure?
SLAM: Yeah, I would be disappoingted, Commissioner. Come on, man, you gotta have some thoughts on it....
STERN: Well, I think that the international players have helped push the domestic players. I think that, if you have a situation where you have 400 jobs and suddenlyu 75 to 80 of those jobe are occupied by outsied talent that wasn't previously available, I think it gets everybody's attention...whether you know it or not, "OK, we gotta up our game!" "That's the way we compete as Americans. And I think that goes together with coaches in high school and collegesensing that they're going to be held more accountable for the development of their players got tired of hearing that the non-American players had better fundamentals, were better team players. And throw in, a little bit, the loosening of the way the game was being called-or tightening, I should say-so you could allow players with athletic skills as a part of a team, rather that geting hammered if they wre lucky enought to get to the basket.....
SLAM: But do you think that basketball is being played at a higher level, at a younger age, across the board?
STERN: Definitely. It's being played at a higher level, with more preperation, and now more elite athletes, worldwide, are bouncing the ball rather than kicking it.
Musique : SLAM: Let me ask you this the League took a lot of hits over the past 10-15 years, solved its problems and now it seems to be in great shape. But I'm interested to know if there's anything that concerns you right now, as something that might be a perennial problem down the line, something that warrants some proactivity sought solutions?
STERN:(Laughs) How about everything! Like, the way we manage; making sure te game is officiated well bey referees that are respected...When everybody gets called down Congress, we do, too...There's also a huge recession coming and sports is always a disposable income option....there's a skepticism that teams are not trying hard at the end of season. But that's my job, making sure we can take our hits and keep going. The game ultimately carries us; and the game is in great shape That's why we're sitting here having this conversation about this great game with great stars, great matchups, great races...
SLAM: Agreed. Now tell the truth, Commissioner: You want a Boston-L.A. Finals, don't you? You can be honest?
STERN: You know what? We still have 8 years left on our TV contract. Why would we wanna peak so early?
SLAM: Well, Boston doesn't look well-suited to be a contender for the next eight years. I think your window for this dream matchup is short.
STERN: Well, maybe we want to wast until it doesn't matter, wait until it doesn't it's the event that defines the matchup, not the teams that define the event. That's the elusive goal.
Mes livres préférés : I personally think that he wanted the C's and the Lakers would go. It would defenitely help the ratings after last year's TV rating Fiasco. What better than to have the arguably the greatest rivaly in sports and the biggest turnaround in NBA history? And the best baller in the planet? Ratings will shoot up by the millions.
