Ami, like any other teenage girl, has only one thing in mind...boys! More specifically, one boy, Niggatowa Kowatashi. She tries to act all sweet, prim, and proper on the outside, but we also get to see "Inner Una", a "darker" (and perhaps the true) hidden version of her personality, whenever she makes certain comments.
As the stereotypical, three way, love-hate-triangle goes...Rock Lee likes Ami, while Ami thinks Rock Lee's annoying. Ami likes Niggatowa, while Niggatowa thinks Ami is quite stunning! Of course Lee hates Niggatowa's guts (or at least he thinks he does, at times), while Niggatowa thinks Lee is just an freak. And to make matters worse...it's the three of them who are teamed up together in missions!
Back then Ami and Hina were best friends and stopped being friends over the years. Before they broke apart, Ami was a shy sensitive girl and Hina was the one who made her come out of her shell, and when Ami announced that she hated Hina, Hina regreted what she did. Then when Ami heard that Hina hated Ami too she said that she and Hina were enemies from then on. After a few days of breaking up,Ami heard Hina say that she was related to the Uchiha Clan.
Ami's horrid past ended up becoming a symbol of her rivalry with Hina, as they both grew older, the rivlery grew stronger because they hater each other. Ami then cuts the rivlery during a battle in the Forest of Death, and later in the chunin exam when she and Kin were chosen to fight for the preliminary rounds, Kin then lost after being stabed in the neck the senbon. Ami also used her "inner Una" to counter Kin's sound attacks. Even though, Ami fells she's not quite done with the Sound Village.
Also, as one of the Kada clan, she inherits the clan's Kekkei Genkai (or bloodline trait)--the Nekogan. She begins to unlock it in the fight with Hina (who herself was using a Kekkei Genkai) and it gradually gains strength as she learns to use it to track movements and observe ninjitsu techniques. It helps having a knucklehead like Saku as a teammate. She doesn't like Saku at first, but as they and Hina learn to work as a team, she shows a surprising willingness to protect Hina. It's the beginning of a pretty complex teammate/rival relationship, as each watches for the other but at the same time wants to become better than the other.
