I support the ideals of a strong europe, a europe united in peace and prosperity, a liberal europe without borders and trade barriers where businesses can fluorish and people are free to travel, work and live enywhere they want. A europe open to all people who are willing to embrace western values and work hard to make something of themselves, irrespective of ethnicity, religion, political orientations etc... . A europe which can speak with a single voice on the global stage, and which is a strong ally of the USA and other western democracies and can work with these countries to fight islamic extremism and spread peace and democracy around the world. I believe in an istitution which allows 27 democratic countries which share a common history, common values and are geographically very close, to come together and cooperate on a range of issues of strategic importance, from science and technology to agricolture, from energy to food safety, from free trade to monetary and economic stability, from environmental protection to fight against climate change, from transport and infrastructures to foreign policy and security. I believe that a supranational organization like the European Union offers european countries a unique opportunity to compete in all of these fields with the other major superpowers of today's modern globalized world, while allowing them to remain proud of their own national cultures and identities at the same time

Imagine if one were to step through a tear in time, and appear in front of some prisoners in Auschwitz or Belsen. Imagine telling them of a Europe at peace, and democratic from Talinn to Galway, with a single currency and an elected parliament and a guarantee that a Pole in Germany or a German in Malta or a Maltese in Sweden can stand up and say "I am an EU citizen, and I will be treated as an equal."

A Europe in which French and German troops share weapons, and their ministers sit in joint cabinet session, elected in
free elections.

They would call it a fantasy.

Yet everyday, 490 million people call it home.

His Majesty The King of the Belgians, the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, the President of the French Republic, the President of the Italian Republic, Her Royal Highness The Grand Duchess of Luxembourg, Her Majesty The Queen of the Netherlands,

Determined to lay the foundations of an ever closer union among the peoples of Europe,

Resolved to ensure the economic and social progress of their countries by common action to eliminate the barriers which divide Europe,

Affirming as the essential objective of their efforts the constant improvement of the living and working conditions of their peoples,

Recognising that the removal of existing obstacles calls for concerted action in order to guarantee steady expansion, balanced trade and fair competition,

Anxious to strengthen the unity of their economies and to ensure their harmonious development by reducing the differences existing between the various regions and the backwardness of the less favoured regions,

Desiring to contribute, by means of a common commercial policy, to the progressive abolition of restrictions on international trade,

Intending to confirm the solidarity which binds Europe and the overseas countries and desiring to ensure the development of their prosperity, in accordance with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations,

Resolved by thus pooling their resources to preserve and strengthen peace and liberty, and calling upon the other peoples of Europe who share their ideal to join in their efforts,

Have decided to create a European Economic Community
