FAVORITE QUOTATIONS:

"Freedom to differ is not limited to things that do not matter much. That would be a mere shadow of freedom. The test of its substance is the right to differ as to things that touch the heart of the existing order."

(Supreme Court Justice Robert Jackson in the 1943 case West Virginia Board of Education v. Barnette.)

"When any opinion leads us into absurdities, it is certainly false...."

(David Hume in "A Treatise of Human Nature")
Nom : MTH
Pays : États-Unis
Profession : College administrator and professor
Films et spectacles : FAVORITE MOVIES (no particular order): Capote / The Princess Bride (some say it's nothing more than a chick flick, but I think it's clever, insightful, well acted, and very funny) / Ed Wood / Miracle on 34th Street (the original) / Sicko / Love and Human Remains / Grease / The Trouble With Angels / The Jerk / The Austin Powers Series / Back to School / Borat / Mad Hot Ballroom/ Little Shop of Horrors / Tea and Sympathy (goofy as it is)/ Ferris Bueller's Day Off / Superbad / There are others. I just can't think of them now. FAVORITE TV SHOWS (no particular order): Strangers With Candy / The Daily Show / Cash Cab (every time I hail a taxi, I hope I've finally found the Cash Cab) / Saturday Night Live / 30 Rock / The Amazing Race / Ugly Betty / Religion and Ethics Newsweekly / Mad TV / Will and Grace / Frasier / Little Britain / All In The Family / Chappelle's Show / The Soup / Best Week Ever / The Sopranos / Graham Norton's various talk shows / Project Runway / American Dad (Roger the alien is hysterically funny)/ Family Guy/ Still Standing/ Desperate Housewives/ Flipping Out/ Six Feet Under/ InfoMania (Current TV)/ FAVORITE RADIO SHOWS: The Brian Lehrer Show (local public radio station here in New York) / Speaking of Faith (NPR / American Public Media, the BEST program about religion, spirituality, and ethics on the air) / Morning Edition (NPR) / This American Life (NPR) / The Sound of Young America (NPR) / The Howard Stern Show (though I don't listen as much now that he's on satellite radio) / The Sam Seder Show (Air America). FAVORITE SHOWS (theater, no particular order): Spamalot / Hairspray / Sunday in the Park with George (the original production, though I recently saw the revival and thoroughly enjoyed it) / Avenue Q / Wicked / Follies / Aida / Cabaret / Angels In America / Little Shop of Horrors / The Secret Garden (beautifully staged and there's one song in the score that makes me cry whenever I hear it) / John Leguizamo's one-person shows / Chicago / Boeing Boeing (I'm not much for French farce, with all the physical comedy and door slamming, but the women in the current production of this play are so fantastic and funny that it eclipsed any issues I have with French farce).
Musique : Hard to say. There is such a range of stuff on my iPod: from classical to the pop-iest of pop. FAVORITE GROUPS AND SINGERS: Nirvana / Whitney Houston (the pre-crack-is-whack Whitney, because now I do not know what the hell is going on with her) / Rob Thomas / Matchbox Twenty, Beyonce (I kinda hate to admit it, but I like most of her stuff) / Jody Watley (her cover of 'Boderline' is great) / Sarah McLachlan (some of songs are a bit too airy-fairy for me, but she has an amazing voice) / Billy Joel / Bryan Adams / Cake / Carol Douglas / Cyndi Lauper / Darlene Love / Diana Krall / Evanescence (the lead singer's voice is amazing) / Heather Headly / Hoobastank / India Arie / Korn / Jason Mraz / Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam / Luther Vandross / Mama Cass / Maroon 5 / Mary J. Blige (I love her cover of 'One' with U2, in addition to lots of her other songs) / Michael Buble / Pink / REM / Vanessa Williams / Boston. (There are others.)
Mes livres préférés : MORAL MINDS (THE NATURE OF RIGHT AND WRONG) by Marc Hauser / DOUBT: A HISTORY (by Jennifer Michael Hecht)/ Anything by David Sedaris/ MISQUOTING JESUS (by Bart Ehrman)/ LETTER TO A CHRISTIAN NATION (by Sam Harris)/ THE GOOD BOOK: READING THE BIBLE WITH HEART AND MIND (by Peter Gomes)/ VALUE AND VIRTUE IN A GODLESS UNIVERSE (by Erik J. Wielenberg) / THE MISMEASURE OF MAN (by Stephen Jay Gould)/ THE GROWING PAINS OF ADRIAN MOLE (by Sue Townsend)/ UTOPIA (by Thomas More) / THE LOST LANGUAGE OF CRANES (by David Leavitt)/ LIES AND THE LYING LIARS WHO TELL THEM (by Al Franken)/ AFTER VIRTUE (by Alasdair MacIntyre)/ GOD IS NOT GREAT (by Christopher Hitchens)/ THE BIBLE (though, technically speaking, that's a collection of books)/ GOD: A BIOGRAPHY (by Jack Miles)/ CATHOLICISM (by Richard McBrien)/ LEVIATHAN (Thomas Hobbes)/ The recently published anthology THE PORTABLE ATHEIST is excellent and well worth picking up./ And I'm a major comedy freak: stand-up and all. If I could come back in another life, it would be as a stand-up comic.

A look at Mark 13:30 and its parallels in Matthew and Luke, examining Jesus' failed prediction regarding his second coming -- "[T]his generation will not pass away until all these things take place."
A series showing the wildly differing and conflicting conclusions that believers reach about what their scriptures say and mean. Why would the biblical god leave his devotees in such a muddle of confusion about what is purportedly his written word?

Hi prof..I just saw your resent video on same sex marriage in California.

I'm confused, so I have a question.

What are the legal repercussion, of the right to marry for same sex couples, in the US. I only ask because I live in Denmark, where I can actually inherit from my girlfriend (may chance forbid), because we have lived together for more than 2 years....I hope that made sense!

I'm sry. to even ask this question, but are the legal standings for same sex marriages (when legal), even the same as for heterosexual ones in the US.

Yours truly
JRBendixen

ProfMTH, wrong person I sent the message to. I was talking about the guy who was going to vote for McCain. it was kind of truth with a joke in it.

Akatam0t0ma, I am sorry for you on that.

Should Obama become president, I hope you are right about it being silly, because if you are wrong, things are not gonna get any better.

Anyway, I still endorse McCain for president :-)
Akatam0t0ma (il y a 6 jours)
To dismiss it as silly is easy, however, I would like to see a more substantial rebuttal of the points made in the article.

Most notably, how could you ignore the point about the NAFTAgate scandal? I would like to know what you have to say on the subject...
Akatam0t0ma (il y a 6 jours)
Hey ProfMTH, have you read yet the Obama article I linked you to about a week ago or so?
I would like to know your views on it! ;-)

Faith that Big Foot is not everywhere, not invisible and not watching my every move, yes?

Actually not really, can faith in the negative really be compared to faith in the positive? I mean; everyone thinks that Thunder isn't caused by Thor's chariot, but would you call that faith?

And in the complete absence of evidence for the positive, does one really need 'faith' to come to the conclusion: 'No, Captain America isn't real'.

(Technical language FTW)

Whatever that means.
