FSX scenery looks "pretty" but not realistic, in my opinion. X-Plane 9 focuses on accuracy more than effects... because it's a flight sim, and simmers want realism. FSX is a "sim" that was marketed to simmers and gamers alike, so it's a mixed bag. Alot of performance killing eye candy was crammed in to attract gamers... because most gamers only care about graphics.

The hardcore sim community that was responsible for the success of the series pretty much got screwed by Microsoft selling out to balance both sides... but amazingly, alot of simmers haven't realized it yet. Microsoft managed to make them believe that all the unnecessary effects that actually make the sim look LESS realistic (overdone reflections, HDR, cartoon-like scenery, etc) and perform like utter crap was done FOR the simmers. It was in fact put in to get more money out of the arcade/shooter/gamer crowd.

I think it compromised the integrity alot, and watered down what could have been a serious sim. If you're a simmer, go for X-Plane... If you just want to relax (but smash your head against the wall because you get 11 FPS) go for FSX. However- there is alot of add-on scenery for FSX that looks very realistic, and boosts FPS alot, because instead of rendering millions of "eye candy" bits, it just renders satellite scenery textures. There isn't much to it, but it looks REAL, which is what I like.

Not biased here- just rational. I own and enjoy both, but have MUCH more respect for X-Plane 9. It is a true simulation made by a handful of people, untainted by greed, and the aim was for realism over money. Sims like that are very rare, and I appreciate it.
