1965: This Lionel Bart song, 'It's Yourself' was recorded by Shirley Bassey and released on Columbia records as the side (A)...and side (B) was titled, 'Secrets.' This 'Big Belter' song which is perfect for Bassey who can 'Knock-Em-Out-Of-The-Park' when she lets go, hit the Adult Contemporary Charts and reached #38. Another Bart song that Shirley did very well with was 'As Long As He Needs Me' from the musical Oliver when it reached the Billboard Charts at #2 back in 1960.

1977: This classic song, 'Razzle Dazzle' was the Side (B) of Shirley Bassey's single that included, 'I Let You Let Me Down Again' for Side (A). This song was never included on one of her LP's, but it was finally released in 1994 on Shirley's digitally remastered CD titled, "Bassey - The EMI/UA Years 1959-1979". Synopsis of the Musical, Chicago: This song is from the Broadway musical vaudeville "Chicago". The Premiere had been on June 1, 1975 in the 46th Street Theatre in New York and it was a success with more than 900 performances. But the story goes much further back into history. The story of "Chicago" is from a play written by Maurine Dallas Watkins in 1926. In 1942 a feature film "Roxie Hart" was released starring Ginger Rogers. In the 70's Kander and Ebb then made their vaudeville musical "Chicago" out of it. It was remembered as a triumph for choreographer/director/co-librettist Bob Fosse and his stars rather than for the story. But in the sping of 1996 New York's City Center included "Chicago" in its 'Encores' series of concert versions of forgotten musicals and now the story seemed to have parallels to actual affairs with its story about a murderess who goes free. Somehow the score, which had seemed merely functional 20 years before, sounded much better. Six months later, the show was revived on Broadway to rave reviews and in 1997 London got it's own version. The movie musical was released in 2002 with great reviews. Catherine Zeta-Jones (Velma Kelly), Renee Zellweger (Roxie Hart), Richard Gere (Billy Flynn), Queen Latifah (Matron "Mama" Morton. Zeta-Jones received an Best Supporting Oscar for her role.
LYRICS - (In Musical, sung by Billy Flynn Character - But that never stopped a DIVA like Shirley!) Give 'em the old razzle dazzle Razzle dazzle 'em Give 'em an act with lots of flash in it And the reaction will be passionate Give 'em the old hocus pocus Bead and feather 'em How can they see with sequins in their eyes? What if your hinges all are rusting? What if, in fact, you're just disgusting? Razzle dazzle 'em And they'll never catch wise Give 'em the old razzle dazzle
Razzle dazzle 'em Back in the days of old Methusulah Everyone loves the big bamboozulah Give 'em the old three ring circus
Stun and stagger 'em When you're in trouble Go into your dance Though you are stiffer than a girder
They let you get away with murder Razzle dazzle 'em And you got a romance Give 'em the old razzle dazzle
Razzle dazzle 'em Give 'em an act that's unassailable They'll wait a year till you're available Give 'em the old wobble bammy Daze and dizzy 'em Show 'em the first rate sorcere you are Long as you keep 'em way off balance How can they spot you got no talents? Razzle dazzle 'em Razzle dazzle 'em And they'll make you a star

1965: This song, 'Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang' was going to be Shirley's second James Bond Movie Theme, eventually giving her a total of 4 with 'Goldfinger' - 'Diamonds Are Forever' and 'Moonraker' but her version apparantly was not exactly what the producers were looking for and so they let Dionne Warwick give it a try; they also provided her with a slightly different orchestral arrangement. In the end, neither artist received the song. Shirley's good friend and co-patriot, Sir Tom Jones who was just starting out in the recording business at this time, received the big break and was given the Theme with a newly written song titled, 'Thunderball' which was the same as the movie title. And, the rest, as they say, is history! After all these years, it is great that Shirley's version of this fun and playful song has finally been released on one or more of her compilation CDs.
A short synopsis: The original main title theme to Thunderball was entitled "Mr. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang," which was written by John Barry and Leslie Bricusse. The title was taken from an Italian journalist who in 1962 dubbed agent 007 as Mr. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. Barry had thought he couldn't write a song about a vague "Thunderball" term or the story of the film, so his song was a description of the character of James Bond.[1]
The song was originally recorded by Shirley Bassey, but was later rerecorded by Dionne Warwick. Both versions were not released until the 1990s. The song was removed from the title credits after producers Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman were worried that a theme song to a James Bond movie would not work well if the song did not have the title of the film in its lyrics. John Barry teamed up with lyricist Don Black and wrote "Thunderball" which was sung by Tom Jones who, according to Bond production legend, fainted in the recording booth when singing the song's final, high note. Jones said of the final note, "I closed my eyes and I held the note for so long when I opened my eyes the room was spinning." [2] Like "Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", the lyrics of "Thunderball" are a description of Bond's character.

SONG LYRICS: He's tall and he's dark, And like the shark, he looks for trouble, That's why the zeroes double, Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
He's suave and he's smooth And he can soothe you like vanilla. The gentleman's a killer. Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
Damoiselles and danger Have filled the stranger's past. Like a knife he cuts thro' life Like every day's the last.
He's fast and he's cool. He's from the school that loves and leaves 'em... A pity if it grieves 'em! Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang's...not a fool!
Oh, damoiselles and danger Have filled the stranger's past. Like the knife he cuts thro' life Like every day's the last.
He's fast and he's cool. He's from the school that loves and leaves 'em... A pity if it grieves 'em! Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang's...not a fool!

1961: Shirley Bassey reached for Platinum when this soft love ballad, 'Reach For The Stars' reached Number 1 on the British Charts back on September 21, 1961. This song stayed on the charts for a total of 18 weeks. The side (A) of this 45 single was, 'Climb Every Mountain' from the Musical Play, The Sound of Music, and this classic also went to Number 1 for Shirley. 1964/65: This song, 'Strange How Love Can Be' was the (B) Side of the Goldfinger Single which was released in the UK in 1964 and then in the USA on January 30, 1965. This 45 Columbia Record single reached #21 in the UK, but climbed to #8 on the Hot 100 USA singles charts, and remained their for 13 weeks. Obviously, this side (B) song never received the attention that Goldfinger did, but it is a great upbeat song and thus deserves to be heard again. This song was also released on Extended Plays in the UK, France, and Spain in 1964 but the track never made it to a full LP. In 1989, it was finally included on the one of Shirley's compilation CDs called, 'Shirley Bassey - I'm In The Mood For Love.' and then again in 2006 on Shirley's 'Columbia/EMI Singles' collection. 1967: This obscure King/Lewis song which was produced by Shirley's husband at the time, Kenneth Hume, was recorded in 1967 but it never made it to one of Shirley's LP's. When artists go into the recording studio they actually record many more songs than what will be produced and released to the public, and the producers have to make the final last minute cut decisions. I really like this song and thus I'm very glad that, finally, in the 90's this track was released on one of Shirley's many compilation CDs titled, 'Shirley Bassey EMI/UA Years - 1959-1979. The package contains 5 CDs, but for Shirley Bassey fans, this CD is a must! Shirley Bassey delivers a stirringly powerful montage to the great Comedian/Vaudville/Broa
Shirley Bassey delivers a stirringly powerful montage to the great Comedian/Vaudville/Broadway/Singer Fannie Brice along with all the actresses who have portrayed her with this Charles-Willemetz- Yvain-Pollock classic, MY MAN. The original composers penned this song back in 1916 and shortly after Pollock wrote the English lyrics. This song has been recorded by many other great artists over the decades including Brice, Billie Holiday, Eartha Kitt, Diana Ross (Lady Sings the Blues), Vikki Carr, and Barbra Streisand (Funny Girl), and each brings to the table their own unique personality and singing style. I personally think all renditions are excellent! Of the second generation artists to sing this song, both Shirley's and Eartha Kitt's recordings do include all the lyrics, including one very controvercial phrase, which other artists in recent decades have decided to eliminate. Fannie Brice was born Fania Borach in 1891 and she passed away of a stroke in 1951 at the age of 60. Of course most people today know of this song based on either the musical and/or the movie Funny Girl starring Barbra Streisand and Omar Sharif. Streisand won an oscar for this part. Unfortunately, Hollywood does what it does for entertainment purposes and the screen writers wrote into both the play and movie a ton of falsehoods. Fannie Brice was married three times, 1) Frank White When she was a teenager for a short period, 2) Nick Arnstein (M 1918 - He was a Big Time Crook!), 3) Billy Rose (Songwriter, M 1929 -pictures included in this clip). For those who would like to know more about the real Fannie Brice, rent the movie, The Rose of Washington Square - 1939 starring Alice Faye. It cast such a real depiction of Fanny and those around her during her young life that she actually sued the production company for defamation of character, but the suit was eventually settled out of court. If you are only interested in reading about some of the discrepencies between her real life and the Ray Stark movies (Funny Girl & Funny Lady) open your browser and type in Funny Girl Debunked: Fanny Brice Facts by John Kenrick. It's just the title of Kenrick's article folks; the movies, although not quite accurate, are cinematic musical masterpieces! 1966 Single: This song, 'Take Away' is Shirley Bassey's first single under the United Artist Label. The other song (Side A) was, 'Don't Take The Lovers From The World.' These two songs are on the upbeat side, and at first the music will remind you of something that Petula Clark or Cher would have recorded during this time. But, after only a few bars into the song that first thought will fade as Shirley takes this simple jingle and places her own 'Big Belter' stamp on it; she moves up & down the vocal scales easily transitioning from a purr to a Tiger Bay growel with amazing power and vocal clarity. 1965: Shirley Bassey recorded the Sound Track Theme song to the 1965/66 movie, 'The Liquidator' staring Rod Taylor, Jill St. John and Trevor Howard. You can see several lives clips of Shirley performing the Main Theme Song here on Youtube. However, this montage clip is the 'End Title' song called, 'My Liquidator' and in contrast to the main theme which is brassy and wildly upbeat, it is a soft love ballad. I really like the main theme song, but on the slow songs like this one Shirley beautifully shows off her full rich vocal sound, and her execution is flawless as always! This movie is based on the Boysie Oakes stories written by novelist John Gardner. The movie is a funny spoof on the spy genre that was typical of the 1960's. This secret agent is a lover...not a figher; he even has a fear of flying! After all these years, the movie sound track is finally back available for sale on CD. These two theme songs are also offered for sale on verious Shirley Bassey compilations.
