This clip is an open message to all citizens of the cosmos.
Whether you know it or not, everyday you use what Aristotle, Hypatia, Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler, Newton, Einstein, etc. gave us. They gave us knowledge.
Carl Sagan stood on the shoulders of these giants of science and saw further. He gave us much more than knowledge, coalescing their science into one inescapable result; love. Do you use it everyday?
Sagan's legacy is a love unadulterated by dogma, superstition, authority, and fear. It is literally Universal; accessible to anyone who opens their eyes, heart, and mind.
If you think of the relentless advance of science as a "great human demotion," please, think again. Through science, Sagan courageously revealed an overlooked but wonderful paradox of humility. One that turns the "demotion" upside down. By taking us out of the center of the universe, Sagan put us back in - for truer reasons. He showed that our value is intrinsic to the universe, and that our story, is the universe's story.
Sagan lit the way to a love rooted in truth, even if some of those truths hurt at first (which is the reason some find it difficult to accept). But the reward for courage is a new way to love ourselves, our lot in life, our planet, our place in space and time, and perhaps most importantly, each other. Sagan showed us that love does not come from outside this universe, it comes from within - from within the youniverse.
As the battle between religion and science rages on, why isn't it clear that love without knowledge is lame, and that knowledge without love is dangerous? Alone they are equally meaningless. It's such a shame that science and love are divorced in the minds of most. As a scientist, I know how gushy and sentimental this sounds. So let me try to express it in a way you critical thinkers are accustomed to:
Knowledge is power.
Love of knowledge.
To know the power of love.
I'm not sure if this is a formally valid syllogism. But no matter your stripe, that's what Carl Sagan gave all of us; truthful, transcendent, pure, poetic, powerful, love. I'd say he gave more, but how could anyone give more than that?
We've been 10 times around the sun without him.
Have you ever noticed that there are just some people who seemed to be especially "changed" by Carl Sagan? Those who go so "ga-ga" over him, that even ten years after his death, they still blog, gush, and talk nearly incessantly about him? And these are often the people least likely to otherwise worship, idolize, or even get excited about a professional athlete, celebrity, rock star, authority or politician.
I'm one of those people. My life-trajectory was tugged and defined by the gravity of Carl Sagan. He gave all of us reasons to cherish the pale blue dot and "all that ever was or is or ever will be." He personified the Cosmos -- literally. A gifted scientist, communicator, dad, and human being, he moved millions to see.
But what's more incredible than how many he did move, is how many have somehow missed the message. Because make no mistake - and he would be the first to admit -- his legacy is about the message not the man. As endearing as he was, this is not a cult of personality, but of the Cosmos.
Carl Sagan articulated poetic and accessible accounts of reality that were so beautiful and simple that once you understood what he was saying, you would never see the world the same way again. Everything was meaningful and awesome. So ask yourself if you understand what he was saying. Do you have any idea what you are missing? Please, take some time to get to know what Carl Sagan was telling us. So many smart, thoughtful, and loving people can't be wrong. I invite you to join the club.
I often wonder how much better our world be if he were still here to offer his insights and guidance. But he is gone. And the rest of us who did hear him can only forge ahead, doing what we can to open people's eyes.

Chapter 1
The jonas brothers are just comming home from a concert just a while ago in New Jersey and settling in their old original home of Wycoff. Its about 4:00 in the afternoon.
Kevin: ahh! Home Sweet Home!!
Joe: im tired!
Kevin: im wiped out... i think im gonna take a nap...
Joe: Kev! only old men take "NAPS"!
Nick punches him
Joe: oh uhh but not you nick! I was just kiddin you know!
Nick: you better be kidding! Mom! im gonna take a walk outside, Ill be back later!
Mrs. J: okay hunny, do you need big rob to come with you??
nick: nah, bye!
he walks out
Mrs j: what do ya know boys, he might bring home a gurl!
they laugh
Nick was walking outside, admiring everything he sees. He stoped and looked at the magnificent sky.
Nick: How Beautiful!!!
He was about to go home when he turns around and bumps into someone.
???: OUCH!!! *the person was a girl and she fell back hard with her elbo's getting scratched against the pavement. It was rugged and rough.
Nick: Omg! im so sorry!!! *he helps her up*
girl: ahh that stings!!
Nick: your hurt!! *he takes her arm and examines it for a second or two as it bled*
girl: nono, its just a few deep cuts *she closes her eyes to seal in the pain* I really gotta go *she starts walking away but nick runs up in front of her*
Nick: whats your name??
girl: kim....
Nick: kim?? okay kim, please this is all my fault, come with me my mom can clean your wounds!
Kim: uh.... i dont know, it hurts soo bad
nick: then come with me! *he lends out his hand*
she takes his hand and they walk over to the jonas house.
The house was very quiet and when nick walks in, he lets kim sit in one of the chairs in the kitchen.
Nick goes up stairs to find mrs jonas
Nick: MOM!! MOM!!
Mrs jonas: what nick???
Nick: uhm well, I bumped into this girl and she fell back and got hurt badly... MOM!!!
Mrs jonas: oh sorry, where is this girl??
Nick grabs her hand and takes her downstairs
On the other hand, while this was happening, Frankie walks in the kitchen and see's kim.
Frankie: WHO ARE YOU???
he walks up to her and see's that she was bleeding
Frankie: ARE YOU HURT!!! im frankie!
Kim: im kim...
Frankie: you want a hug???
he opens up his arms and they hug
nick and mrs jonas walk in
Nick: so i see youve met frankie!
kim: hes soo sweet!
Frankie: NICK!! KIM IS HURT YOU NEED TO HELP HER!!!
kim blushes
Nick: mom, this is kim
mrs jonas: its very nice to meet you kim, now let me see your wounds, *she looks at her elbo's scratched deep* oh i see....
Joe walks in
Joe: MOM! you were right!!!
he walks near kim's bleeding arm
Nick: JOE! NO DONT!!!
joe stops and see's kim's arm.
a few seconds later he falls back with a loud THUMP.
kim's jaw dropped
Mrs jonas: Nick! hurry up and get kevin!! im sorry, please forgive my son joseph, he's really terrified of blood..
Kim: oh my gosh... ill leave now, i caused you enough trouble!!! *starts to stand up but mrs jonas stops her*
mrs jonas:its okay, it happens, just stay if this isnt treated, it might get really serious!
kim sits back down
Nick runs upstairs
nick: kevin!! you better hurry up! come downstairs NOW!
kev: nick! you woke me up from my nice nap!!
nick: just come down!
they walk downstairs and kevin see's joe on the floor
kev: did he-
nick: YEA!
kevin runs down and caries joe onto the couch, nick goes into kitchen cabinet and takes out some cotton balls and alcohol and walks back to the group
nick: here you go mom
kim starts shaking as mrs jonas pours the alcohol on a cotton ball
mrs jonas: kim hunny are you afraid?? this will only take a few seconds!
kim: uhmmm..... *still shaking*
Mrs jonas: kim, would it be better if nick holds your hand while i do this? or maybe it be better if he hugged you??
nick holds out his arms and hugs her tight as mrs jonas cleaned her excruciating elbo. the stinging grew worse and kim squeezed nick harder. kim sobbed into nicks shirt.
mrs jonas: okay kim, your wound is clean now, but ive got some good and bad news, good news is that your alright, but....
