basically what i use the knives for is to cover a large amount of canvas with paint and lay a foundation to the canvas. i really dont use the knives to mix paint although i know people use it for that. i usually put paint on the bottom of the knife and spread it throughout the canvas and that gives me a nice texture to the canvas. you can use modeling paste for texture as well. i use the knife's blade to create shading on objects by pulling paint in different directions away from the object.

sorry about the late late response, been busy with work. the paintings generally take me around 3-4 hours to do. i usually work on them at night after work and doing some programming for my personal projects. i use acrylic paint as well. its affordable medium.
