By the way, what Perfideousregicide says isn't quite true - the best thing to get is those tubs of eyes made especially for animating with, or if the head is gonna pop - they have to be plasticine so you can squish them!

The best thing to use as eyes in a plasticine animation is fimo, they look good but don't smudge.
