BIO

Born in Brisbane to a classically trained Sri Lankan mother, Raj Siva-Rajah was a boy caught between two worlds. From the age of 8 he began learning the classical Carnatic music of the east, while also falling in love with the gritty angst that was the grunge era.

Raj's move to Sydney in 2005 led to the birth of The Sunpilots, who slipped into public consciousness in 2006 with the release of their first 4-track EP. Despite being little more than a demo, the EP found its way onto the airwaves through Australian radio stations such as Nova and Triple j. A few months later, The Sunpilots were awarded a Musicoz Producers Award.

A flood of online interest followed, leading to one of the largest MySpace and Youtube fan bases in the country and the band's first iTunes "Single of the Week". The Sunpilots soon began to turn heads overseas: winning Best International Artist at the Canadian Independent Music Awards and being nominated for both Artist and Single of the Year at the LA Music Awards in both 2006 and 2007.

When The Sunpilots finally released their debut studio single 'Spotlight in the Sun' in May 2007, the band was completely unprepared for the response. 'Spotlight in the Sun' became the #1 most added song on Australian radio (including the #1 most added song in the Contemporary Rock genre). The 'Spotlight in the Sun' music video became the most watched Australian music video on You Tube and aired regularly on Video Hits and Channel V. 'Spotlight in the Sun' is still being added to radio playlists across the country -- last month it entered the top 100 most played songs in Australia.

In December 2007 The Sunpilots won Commercial Radio Australia's New Artists 2 Radio (NA2R) competition (rock category). The band performed at Crown Live in Melbourne in front of radio industry leaders and heavyweights from across the country to a great response. As part of the prize, the band took home a national $150,000 commercial radio advertising campaign which is being used to promote their upcoming debut album Living Receiver.

On the international stage, The Sunpilots are continuing to turn heads. The band was recently one of 15 rock finalists in the International Song writing Competition (nominated alongside fellow Aussie rockers Eskimo Joe). Judged by the likes of Tom Waits, Julian Casablancas (The Strokes), Robert Smith (The Cure) and Frank Black (The Pixies), the ISC is the largest and most well respected song writing competition in the world. A new track from Living Receiver entitled 'Metric System' was chosen by the judges as being one of the best of 20,000 entries from around the globe.

Now, on the eve of the release of Living Receiver, The Sunpilots have released their latest single 'You're Gonna Be a Star' - a sexy high-voltage indie rock tune about girls who will do anything to get to the top. As front man Raj Siva-Rajah puts it; "You're Gonna Be a Star is about fake girls with fake breasts and fake tans. Simple as that." Living Receiver has been a year in the making and is quickly becoming one of the year's most highly anticipated indie rock albums. The album was co-produced by Aussie producer Phil McKellar (Silverchair, Grinspoon, Kisschasy) and mastered in New York by Ted Jensen (Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance).

With an extensive national album tour throughout July, August and September and the long awaited "Living Receiver""due in Australian stores on August 2nd, expect to be hearing a lot from The Sunpilots in 2008.

INTERNATIONAL FANS: You'll be able to buy Living Receiver on iTunes from August 2nd -- CDs will be available for international purchase (online) at the end of August :)
